credit score

A credit score is a numerical calculation of how credit worthy a person is (or isn’t!). Different scales are used by different organizations in different countries, but in general the higher the score, the more reliable the borrower. Credit scores are typically compiled by credit bureaus, who collect credit information from banks, finance companies, credit card companies, retails stores, landlords, and other organizations. The Wikipedia has some extensive discussions of credit scoring in various countries, with an especially detailed look at American credit scores.
